Guys-I have a new Cat 299D2 XHP I bought for mulching. I am looking at heads and would like some input. I have a larger forestry machine with a Fecon head (which is admittedly older) and have done a demo with an FAE head. Fecon is going to bring me a skid steer head to demo. I was planning to go. You could also use a 100hp class skid steer loader but I find a tractor is a lot easier on the driver . Your machines must be versatile these days , one machine must be able to multi task otherwise you will need to employ extra people , transport extra machinery , fuel , register , maintain and pay for extra machinery . I have a cat track skid steer 279c, We use it with a Muclhing head attachement. I came a cross a problem and am seeking some help. We damage the electrical jumper on the mulching head during transport. (This is an electrical jumper that activates the machines high flow function for the mulching head, it plugs into the attachement connection port). There is a lot of mulching going on here for fire protection. Those big stand alone tracked mulching machines look like expensive money pits. Those full width skid steer mounted ones look like they would be hard on the machine. The mulchers on excavators seem like the way to go as long as the head is sized for the flow and cooling capacity .
We stop every hour and blow it off/out with a gas powered leaf blower. Grease the FAE head every 4 hours. G rease the 299 every day it works. We did about 1 1/2 acres of selective mulching in 10 hours today. Next month we are going back with the 299/mulcher, ASV with grapple, and Woodmizer sawmill. 5 hour, hour, hour for 5 hour.
