I have several customer's that use a skidsteer to dig a pool, no reason you can't . You can prolly pick up a nice 4wd backhoe cheaper than a mini-ex and skid steer. Ideally, the mini-ex and skid steer is the way to go, but you buy what will be in your best financial interests. tylermckee
I have several customer's that use a skidsteer to dig a pool, no reason you can't use a BX. If you have the BH on it to loosen up most of the ground before scoopin it out will help.
