I suspect bad gas struts, but there is no operators manual with the unit and I don't want to break something by using a hoist if there is something holding it.

Not sure about your 753 but my 743 seems to get stuck as I try to tilt it back. If I grab the metal plate under the seat and lift from there then it comes up fine. It almost seems like it has a safety catch that I have not been able to locate. thanks for the reply.I can actually lift the arms by using the override cable so i can tilt the cab. there is a little square electrical box mounted on the plate that sits over top of the valve. there is also what looks like a selenoid that is mounted directly on top of the valve. Tilt the cab, push down the mechanical lap bar interlock on the left side of the frame (with the engine off obviously) and work the sticks around while you watch the linkages to see what's going on.
